YML: NGLCC Certified

Who is the NGLCC?

The NGLCC, or the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce, is a non-profit advocacy group. Together, they fight for the expansion and advancement of the LGBT community in the economic realm. The group launched its humble journey in 2002 when their co-founders, Justin Nelson and Chance Mitchell, saw the budding economic impact of the LGBT movement. The NGLCC is now a melting pot comprised of a team of board directors, founding and corporate partners, and team members. Each part plays an integral role in the global and domestic advancement of the LGBT community.

In addition to advocating for the inclusion of LGBT owned businesses, the NGLCC works to innovate, collaborate, and re-write policies worldwide.

Despite the success and recognition of the NGLCC, the LGBTQ+ community remains one of the most marginalized and targeted minority. The Uniform Crime Report (UCR) saw a 17% rise in overall hate crimes in which 15.8% were targeted for their sexual orientation in 2017. However, it must be noted that the UCR is exclusively run on FBI data and police reports. As such, the actual numbers are even more staggering as many victims are silenced and forego reporting to the police. The goal of the NGLCC remains to assist the advancement of LGBT. In order to accomplish this goal, the implementation of pro-LGBT policies at all levels of government is needed.

How to Get Certified

Another arm of the NGLCC is the LGBT Business Enterprise (LGBTBE). Businesses must follow a plethora of criteria that includes the following.

• At least 51% managed by an LGBT person or persons.
• Independent from non-LGBT businesses.
• Legally formed and based in the U.S.

As a certified LGBTBE, businesses are able to promote the diversification of businesses to include LGBT persons. The community is filled to the brim with incredibly professional and innovative individuals who are denied equal access to opportunity. As a certified partner, the business can network to offer positions and in turn, gain amazing members to their team.
